Montessori-Inspired 3-Part Cards for the Safari Ltd SOUTH AMERICA Toob
It's the beginning on the new year, which means Safari Ltd has released their newest toob of animals. The toob of the year is full of South American animals! I'm very excited about it, because I think Safari needs to put out a toob for every continent and region. These toobs are great for putting in your Montessori-inspired continent boxes.
Continent boxes are a Montessori-inspired idea, which are so helpful for homeschooling! They are simply an organized way to store your study materials for each continent (and sometimes the oceans). You can fill the boxes with printables, souvenirs, flags, games, objects, pictures, currency, maps, or anything else you have available. It's ok if you don't fill all the boxes in one day- it's supposed to be a lifelong project.
As I mentioned, the Safari Ltd toobs of animals and objects are great for putting in your continent boxes. I'm currently working on redoing many of my printable matching cards for the Safari Ltd toobs, but here's what I have available for each continent:
AFRICA
- Rainforest Animals (not continent specific)
- Monkeys and Apes (not continent specific)
- Endangered Animals (not continent specific)
- Penguins (not continent specific)
ASIA
- Endangered Animals (not continent specific)
- Monkeys and Apes (not continent specific)
SOUTH AMERICA

All of my printable cards for the Safari Ltd toobs are designed to work as Montessori 3-part cards. The 3-parts consist of a card a picture and a label, one with only a picture, and one label (see above picture). Kids can work on matching the picture to the label and use the picture with the label as a control card to check their work. They can also work on spelling out the names of each animal with printable cards or shaped letters.
Kids can also match the picture cards with the label to the figurines in the Safari Ltd toob. Together, you can talk about the names of the animals, where they live, what they eat, and sort them by zoological class (mammals, birds, etc). The figurines are also great in messy play, sensory bins, and more! My kids love playing with them outside.
After you've put in your email address into the box, check your inbox for the confirmation email. Open the email and click on the button to confirm your subscription. You'll get a second email with a link to download the printable. Download the PDF from the protected page, print the first two pages twice, and laminate them for long-term use. Then, cut out all the cards and separate them by sets (8 in each identical pile). Leave one set of cards exactly as they are- with the picture and label attached. With the second set of cards, cut the label off the pictures to make two piece. The card with a picture and label, the card with just a picture, and the card with the label now make the three parts of the traditional Montessori 3-part cards.
After you have your 3-part cards and Safari Ltd toob animals ready, you're ready to start your South America continent box! In Montessori tradition, the South American continent is pink, so I recommend this 12x12 plastic paper bin to contain all your treasures. Here are some other great things to add to your bin!
In the Land of the Jaguar <> Where is the Amazon?
A Kid's Guide to South America <> South America Puzzle
Schleich Jaguar Toy <> Wood Frog Instrument
Safari Rainforest Toob <> Flags of Latin America
